Crush & Covet – Protection from the Elements

All so often when we talk about hitting the open road its destinations, routes, fuel (bike and belly) that hogs the conversation. The little things often get left out and forgotten. However, what happens when you neglect the little things? Say it with me people – THEY BECOME THE BIG THINGS! So this weeks crush & covet is all about protection from the elements.

Crush

Andy –NEUTROGENA® Ultra Sheer® Water-Light® Daily Face Sunscreen Lotion – SPF 60 – $14.27

My skin is a result of many generations of pale people living where the sun was often obscured by clouds and it rained. A lot. This is why my melatonin lacking epidermis needs a little help to stay moisturized and protected from the sun.  As a rule, I don’t like creams and lotions. I’m not a fan of any scented products. They feel greasy on my hands and somehow always seems to get in my eyes.  So I stay covered up and in the shade when possible. When I can’t, like when I’m riding, I need to put something on my face to protect it. On a recommendation, I tried this product from Neutrogena.

I like this product because it doesn’t leave me with a greasy feel on my hands. The oil free composition seems to absorb into the skin and feel like it’s hardly there.  It provides SPF 60 and works well on my sensitive face. It comes in a small squeeze type bottle that does not leak in my saddle bags.

This addition to a man’s riding kit is a smart one. Dry skin is not pretty and skin cancer is no joke. I like this product but if you find one you like better, go for it. Just please, put something on before you ride into the sunrise.

Cherie-Lynn – RALPH BY RALPH LAUREN SUNGLASSES RA4004 – $154.95 CDN

I’m a bit of a stickler when it comes to wearing sunglasses to protect my eyes from UV rays but I was really tired of having to wear contacts all the time as well. So I decided I was going to invest in a pair of prescription sunglasses. The last pair I bought was four prescriptions and 14 years ago. I still own those glasses and would occasionally wear them so I knew it was time to get a new pair. I’ll be honest the glasses I bought weren’t my first choice for my fancy new sunglasses. I had originally purchased a nice pair of Oakley’s but when I found out that it was going to cost me an extra $600 (prescription + progressives + polarized lenses) to get my prescription put in I returned them pretty damn promptly. These Ralph Lauren ones are the same style I had bought but the arms were a bit different and it cost me $450 total for the frames, prescription, progressives and polarized lenses. After all, I like wearing my glasses when I’m patio sitting and I need to be able to read menus hence adding the progressive part 🙂  The one adjustment they did make was adjusting the transition line down as they knew I wouldn’t need it in the regular spot and they work beautifully. They also sent me home with the regular lenses just incase I ever want to switch them back to non-prescription glasses.

After having them for a year they are still in great shape even with putting them in and out of my helmet. The only thing I think the Oakley’s have over these are their arms. The Oakley’s arms were thinner and more pliable so wouldn’t have pressed on the side of my head as much. It’s not that these are horrible but after 1.5 hours with my helmet on I feel it.

Andy & Cherie-Lynn – Frogg Toggs Cruisin Toggs Two-Piece Rain Suit

– $97.99 CDN

Up to this point we’ve been lucky and haven’t had to ride in much rain. We have rain some rain suits now that but they’re suits that my sister gave to us from her and my brother-in-laws fishing trip in Newfoundland (and we are very thankful that they passed them on to us as they’ve come in hella handy)and now that we are looking at doing some long trips we need something that;

  1. doesn’t take up as much space when not being used
  2. are better suited for riding bikes not fishing boats
  3. quick dry
  4. breathable but still waterproof
  5. we really want them to be hi-viz.

The Frogg Toggs seem to cover all the wants beautifully and the price is very reasonable. Every time we’ve gone to buy rain gear something else has caught our eye but we know it’s time. It’s like when you’re doing a reno- we all want to spend the money on the pretty stuff never the plumbing and wiring but yet we all know the plumbing and wiring is the important part. That’s kinda how we look at our rain gear purchase.

And seeing as we are getting the rain suits we’ll likely add some boot covers (Gears Ripple Rubber Sole Rain Boot Covers $28.95) as well. If you’ve ever had wet shoes or boots you know how long they take to dry and doing anything in wet footwear has to be one of the most uncomfortable things one does. So if we can prevent that at all we will.

Linda Begin

If you frequent any Canadian motorcycle groups on Facebook chances are you’ve heard of WindSisters. Well, Linda is the mastermind behind this incredible female only riding group. And, if you’ve met Linda in person you are well aware of how truly awesome she is. The first time I met her, in person, was this past fall in Port Dover for the for Friday the 13th rally. We’d had lots of conversations online so I felt I already knew her. What our online conversations didn’t prepare me for was the warmth and friendship that she exudes. Linda was very conscious of making everybody feel included and I don’t think she stopped smiling and saying hello all afternoon!  One thing that I’ve noticed over the off-season is that our community is very important to Linda. She has traveled, sometimes hours, to have dinner with, meet up with and even get tattoos with some of us WindSisters. Bringing together female riders is very important to her and we are all very thankful for her passion.

Read on to learn more about this woman who likes to connect us but above all enjoy life.

Where are you from: Canada

Describe yourself in 5 words or less: Alive, Aware, In Control, Excited, Energy

What do you ride: I bought my 2008 FLHX HD Streetglide for my 50th birthday, that was 6 years ago and I LOVE LOVE LOVE my bike.

Does anybody else in your family ride: no (well my ex husband does)

How long have you been riding: around 9 or 10 years

How old were you when you started riding: 47 or 48

Why did you start: My husband (at the time) came home with a bike, a beautiful black Honda Shadow Ace 750 and I thought it was amazing and beautiful.   I rode on the back for only a couple of rides before I knew, if this was something we would do together, I would have to get my license and my own bike.  So I did!

Next motorcycle: I really love the Streetglide so I would say a newer one (not brand new unless I win a lottery) or a Road Glide.

Never leave home without: I never leave home without my cell phone. When I ride alone, I try to make sure its in my jacket … just in case my bike and I get separated for any reason. Oh and its also my camera and you never know when there will be a photo-op!

Favourite Gear: I love my boots. They are knee-high and Gortex so they don’t mind the rain.   I have purple laces in them and everyone knows me by my boots 🙂  The brand is Timerland, they are very comfortable and practical, and they look kinda hot.

Longest/farthest bike trip: My BF and I rode from Ottawa to Tennessee, rode the Tail of the Dragon, Blue Ridge Mountain Parkway, Skyway, The Snake  and all the most amazing twisty roads I have ever seen! 10 days and our first day was 1,000 km as we wanted to get to a good place to start day 2 from 🙂

Favourite place you’ve ridden: Last summer my BF and I rode to Nova Scotia to attend the Wharf Rat Rally and meet up with all my riding WindSisters from out in NS. We were interviewed on the WRR video, I spoke in a hall promoting women in riding and WindSisters and I got to meet almost 30 WindSisters and ride with them!

Main gig: My main gig, well I work for the Government in downtown Ottawa. My job is steady without being stressful, a great combination.

Side gig: Well I started this little ladies riding group in May 2011 with 4 other of my girlfriends who rode and its grown each and every year and we’ve just reached 2000 Canadian all female riders called WindSisters.  I do have a team of 3 other National Admin now and several area Admins who help promote and keep things running smoothly in WindSisters.

What do you do in the Offseason: I’m a keyboard warrior for WindSisters, a very busy job and I LOVE it!

Twitter: WINDSISTERS CANADA (@WindSistersCan)
Instagram (but I dont use it much):  Linda Begin

Anything extra: It’s funny, before my ex brought home a motorcycle, I never ever really saw them on the road, no part of my life. Over a short time, I knew this was for me, it was exhilarating, scary, fun, exciting, dangerous and I can’t even imagine my life without a motorcycle now. Life is funny that way! I found my niche, I want to unite all the female riders under one big umbrella, one sisterhood where two wheels unite us.

Crush & Covet – Gear

Welcome to our first edition of Crush and Covet!

I will be the first to admit that when I road on the back of Andy’s bike I always wore running shoes, not realizing how important proper foot wear was, jeans, a protective jacket (leather or textile with armour), gloves and of course a good quality and proper fitting helmet.  I’ll also admit that my gloves and jacket were the first thing to go in the bags as it got hot. Riding on the back I didn’t get a lot of air so it was just really hot. I now understand the errors of my ways. Andy on the other hand has always worn proper gear. Occasionally, you’d see him remove his jacket to ride but it’s very, very rare.

Crush

Andy – Klim Rambler Gloves – $99.95

I have a confession to make.  As a male Rider of a certain age (53) who no longer fits into even the wildest definition of skinny jeans, there are a few things that I feel a little embarrassed to like so much.  I like movies with music in them (i.e. “Moulin Rouge”, all the “Pitch Perfect” movies).  I watch “Dancing with the Stars” enough to know the difference between a Rhumba and a Samba.  And I care more about my riding gear than I like to let on.

One of the pieces of gear that I plan to start spending a little more on is a good pair of gloves.  I have typically scoured the lower priced gloves at bike shops in order to find the rare pair that would protect my hands (and I like my hands a lot!) at a price that I won’t hear the screams of my frugal Scottish ancestors in my head.

Ending last season, I was using a soft pair of lined leather gloves that I had bought at Mark’s for general use, but I found them to be pretty good for cold weather riding.   Recently, at the Toronto Bike Show, I tried on a pair of KLIM Ramblers (Tan deerskin gloves) that I fell in love with.  At $99 Cdn, I think they strike a good balance of quality, protection, comfort and, dammit, good looks.  Now I didn’t buy them at the show (the retailer had irritated my Significant Other with their cavalier attitude towards the needs of women riders – ‘nuff said) but I am going to pick up a pair at my local retailer. They fit my hands well, are soft like butter and incorporate some knuckle protection.  And I like the Tan colour.

Cherie-Lynn – Exustar E-SBT123L (Chiki Boot)– $188.95 CDN

I bought these late last year after searching the majority of the summer for a boot that I truly loved. I normally wear skinny styled jeans so I wasn’t a huge fan of how the traditional bike boot looked and wanted something higher. After posting in our Windsisters group and asking what people wore the pictures started rolling in. One of the woman posted a pair of boots and they were exactly what I’ve been looking for. So after asking her about them she told me how incredibly comfortable they were, how great the sole gripped and where she bought them (us women love talking about our gear). Needless to say the next day I headed to Kelley’s Cycle Centre in Hamilton to try them on. They didn’t have my size in black but I was able to try them in brown and they were more than happy to order the black ones for me.

The more I wear them the more I love them and the better they look.

Covet

Andy – Biltwell Gringo S in Gloss Vintage White– $266.99 CDN

Lately, I have really been feeling the whole Retro thing.  I think it started when I bought my retro styled cruiser this summer (’99 Vulcan Drifter 1500).  In any case, I have admired the Biltwell Gringo S Helmets and the Bell Bullitt Helmets.  Both are retro styled, full faced helmets that reference the look of Steve McQueen era racing helmets.  I have tried on both at shops and they both feel quite good on my large, roundish head.

I think one of the reasons that I like this style is that my first helmet was a plain, white full face that looked a lot like the Biltwell Gringo S.  It came with the bike (a ’78 Kawasaki KZ200) and was probably already about 10 years old when I got it.  These days, I wouldn’t keep a helmet more than 5 years and I certainly would look at a used helmet with extreme suspicion.  But hey, the eighties were a crazy time and I didn’t know any better.

I am sorely tempted to grab one of these beauties but my current main helmet (Bell MAG-9 open face) is only a year old and works great for me. However, when I buy a new helmet, I will head over to Steeltown Garage and pick up this Biltwell Gringo S.

CL – Ladies REV’IT Airwave 2 Jacket $299.99 CDN

You might recall from above that I said that I have a textile jacket, well I do but I hate it. It’s a mans jacket and is too big on me and just plain awful.

You may also remember from above where I said that I would take my jacket off when I would get hot? Well this jacket fixes all of that. This Airwave 2 jacket is designed specifically for hot weather riding! Other than where the armour sits the jacket is made up of protective mesh. This will allow me to ride in the hot July weather complete protected – how awesome is that!  I’m not going to need my jacket for a couple of months so that gives me the time I need to tuck a few dollars in my piggy bank every week. 🙂

We hope that you liked our first ever crush and covet.

We are going to do our best to make this a regular Wednesday edition.

TCX Womens Street Dark Waterproof Shoes

posted in: Gear, Reviews, Women Who Ride | 0

I was perusing FortNine, as one does on a dull Wednesday afternoon, and came across these shoes and fell in love. I have a pair of boots that I also love but I’ve seen adding gear to my collection for hot weather riding. I think it’s easy for a lot of people to rationalize not wearing the proper gear because it’s just to hot. I know this happens because I’ve done it in the past. As I get more and more into riding I’m pretty adamant that I want to be protected as much as possible and choosing not to wear gear just because it’s to hot is a pretty shitty excuse – I just need to invest in the proper stuff.

Thanks FortNine for making my online purchasing so easy- you guys rock!

  1. You’re Canadian and supporting a Canadian store is a big deal for me.
  2. Love your real video reviews of product
  3. You get my stuff out to me super quick

This was my first order from FortNine the majority of my purchases are done local as I like supporting my local bike dealers, stores and friends. Now, I ordered these Wednesday afternoon and they arrived Friday afternoon. I almost knocked Andy over as I ran to the door to retrieve them and say thanks to my mailman. As I opened the box I was pleasantly surprised to find stickers – thanks FortNine (other companies want me to pay for them – not happening). These shoes were love at first sight and that was even before I picked them up. I just knew these were what I wanted and hoped for. They are light, have ankle protection, and have reflective material on the back. I did read reviews about the shoes before I placed my order and everyone said they fit big so I ordered a size down and please that I did because they fit perfectly.

One thing that I love about these shoes is that they did some research on a female’s foot and designed these specifically for us. There is a built in rise of 2.5cm (1″) and it honestly makes a much bigger difference than I could have imagined. I can’t stress enough how well these fit and feel.

W.F.C Woman Fitting Concept

The shape of the TCX® Lady range has been designed to perfectly fit the anatomy of the female foot, which is structurally different from the male foot, especially in the metatarsal area, where it is thinner with a more accentuated instep area and a generally smaller heel.

Street Ace Lady Sole Construction

The sole has been designed to offer maximum comfort and protection, thanks to its special 4-levels structure made up of an antibacterial, removable footbed, an EVA insert that absorbs vibration and a structural footbed in thermoplastic material. The sole is made of rubber that is resistant to wear and tear, with a differentiated grip sole.

Even though we snuck out for a ride yesterday I didn’t wear these shoes because well it’s still cold here and also there’s mud in our backyard and I wanted to be warm and also didn’t want to get these dirty quite yet 🙂 Once I use them to ride in I will come back and update this post.

Here are some other interesting tidbits that I loved about these shoes.

  • I love that I don’t have to choose style over safety or safety or style – with these I get it all
  • Their 24/7 concept. These shoes do easily from the bike, to a get together, to a restaurant. No more worries about looking like I’m all decked out in my bike gear when I’m not on the bike.
  • Waterproof
  • Reenforced toe and heel
